QUICK NAVIGATE

Mount Sempana, part of the 7 Summits of Sembalun, has become one of the strongest magnets attracting countless hikers, both local and international. You may often hear people describe it as an alternative to Mount Rinjani, but we do not entirely agree with that view.

This mountain is not a substitute for Rinjani when it is closed, nor is it the mountain you should choose when you feel underprepared in terms of fitness, logistics, or equipment. Mount Sempana offers its own unique hiking experience—from the trail and scenery, to the panoramic views and climbing challenges. It is an adventure that stands on its own, adding richness and variety to your mountaineering journey.

Uniqueness & Attractions

As you begin your hike, you’ll pass through local farmlands, lush forests, and a series of rolling hills whose beauty gradually unfolds. One of the highlights along the way is the so-called “Great Wall of China”, a long stretch of hills resembling a massive wall.

Further along, while ascending the Letter Z trail, don’t forget to look back and take in the breathtaking view of the Sembalun Valley and the dramatic sunset above a sea of clouds blanketing Mount Rinjani.

At the summit of Mount Sempana, you’ll be rewarded with vast savanna fields, layers of hills that seem to guard the mighty Rinjani, and a panorama so magnificent that words can hardly capture it.

Location

The entrance to the Mount Sempana hiking trail is located in Sembalun Bumbung Village, East Lombok. This village serves as one of the main gateways to various trekking destinations in the Sembalun area, including Bukit Nanggi, Pergasingan Hill, and of course, Mount Rinjani. From the village, hikers will find a clearly marked route that first passes through stretches of farmland belonging to local residents before gradually transitioning into forest and open hillsides.

Sembalun Bumbung itself is a charming rural area, surrounded by fertile valleys and cool mountain air, making it not only a starting point but also a pleasant place to rest or prepare before the climb. Basic facilities such as small shops, homestays, and local guides are available here, ensuring that trekkers can stock up on supplies or arrange support services like porters and camping equipment before beginning their ascent.

Mount Sempana Height

The summit of Mount Sempana stands at an elevation of 2,329 meters above sea level (masl), making it an exceptional vantage point to witness both sunrise and sunset. From this height, hikers are treated to breathtaking views of the surrounding Sembalun Valley, the rolling green hills, and the majestic silhouette of Mount Rinjani. The sunrise paints the horizon with soft golden hues, while the sunset creates a dramatic play of colors above the sea of clouds — both offering unforgettable moments for photographers and nature lovers alike.

Is Mount Sempana Safe for Beginners?

In principle, the safety of climbing a mountain cannot be measured solely by how often you hike, but rather by how well-prepared you are with the right equipment, sufficient supplies, and knowledge of the trail. This means that even as a beginner, you can safely climb Mount Sempana as long as you take the time to learn about the route, prepare your gear properly, and ideally go with a local guide or someone experienced. Good physical condition, adequate hydration, and respecting nature’s limits are also key factors that ensure a safe and enjoyable journey.

Mount Sempana Day Hike

If this is your very first tektok (one-day up-and-down) hike, it’s best not to attempt it on Mount Sempana. The trail here is considered quite challenging, with steep inclines and demanding terrain that require stamina and prior hiking experience. Instead, start by training on lighter hills such as Bukit Savana Dandaun or Bukit Pergasingan. These spots will help you adjust your cardiovascular rhythm, build endurance, and gain confidence before taking on the heavier challenge that Sempana presents.

Time Required for Hiking Mount Sempana

There is no exact measure of how long it takes to reach the summit of Mount Sempana, as each hiker has different physical conditions and hiking rhythms. However, on average, the trek to the top usually takes around 4–6 hours. Several factors can affect the duration of the hike, including:

  • Physical condition of the hiker – the more accustomed you are to trekking, the faster your pace will be.
  • Load carried – a full backpack with camping gear will naturally slow you down compared to carrying light essentials.
  • Weather and trail conditions – slippery paths due to rain or thick fog may extend the hiking time.
  • Rest stops – the more breaks you take, the longer the overall journey will be.

For beginners, it is best to allocate extra time to rest comfortably and conserve energy until you reach the summit.

Routes & Hiking Trails of Mount Sempana

In fact, there are several routes to reach the summit of Mount Sempana. However, in this article we will only cover the two most common and frequently used ones: the Tembok Cina Route and the Nanggi Route.

Jalur Tembok Cina

This trail is famous for its long ridge that resembles a giant wall, hence the name “Tembok Cina” (The Great Wall). Hikers will pass through local farmlands, forests, and steep zig-zagging paths that can be quite exhausting. Despite the challenge, the reward is breathtaking views of the Sembalun Valley and Mount Rinjani.

Nanggi Route

This route is dominated by lush vegetation, offering fewer viewpoints along the way, but the terrain is generally more beginner-friendly compared to the Tembok Cina route. Many hikers choose to set up camp at Mount Nanggi to enjoy its stunning sunrise before continuing on to Mount Sempana the following day. Although longer, the trek offers the charm of rolling grasslands, peaceful forest trails, and a more manageable ascent for those new to mountain hiking.

Both routes have their own unique appeal: the Tembok Cina route provides a direct yet challenging climb, while the Nanggi route offers a gentler journey with the option to split the hike over two days for a more relaxed experience.
