Ports in Lombok are information that you must seek and be aware of during your vacation in Lombok without using a tour guide. However, if you have a tour guide ready to assist, it’s not a bad idea to keep this useful information to enrich your knowledge for future reference.

According to Wikipedia, a Port is a transportation facility at the end of the ocean, river, or lake to receive ships and transfer cargo and passengers between islands, countries, and even the world.

It can also be defined as a sheltered water area equipped with terminal facilities.

Common people often refer to it as a pier. However, a pier is one of the components of a port.

Lombok Ports for Ferry and Legundi Crossing

One of the essential infrastructures that a region must have is a Port that can be served by passenger ships like ferries and Legundi. The island of Lombok has two active ports used as connections between islands and provinces.

Lembar Port

Bali Lombok Port, or Lembar Port, is named after the place it is located, Lembar in West Lombok Regency. It serves as the main connection between the island of Lombok and Bali (Padang Bai Port in Bali). The journey from Bali to Lombok or vice versa takes about 5-7 hours, depending on weather conditions, waves, and the number of ships queuing to dock.

This port is situated in a calm bay, and it offers breathtaking views. Therefore, it’s advisable to choose morning or daytime travel to and from Lembar Port, as traveling at night may result in missing out on the surrounding natural scenery.

Even if you must travel at night, there’s no need to worry because Lembar Port now has 24-hour service counters, a prayer room (mushola), and waiting areas for vehicles waiting to cross.

Lembar Port can also connect the island of Lombok with Surabaya through the Legundi ship. The journey of the Legundi ship from Surabaya to Lombok can be completed in just 20 hours at sea. This is much faster compared to a land journey, which can take more than 48 hours.

Kayangan Port

At the eastern tip of Lombok, there is Kayangan Port in Lombok. The name Kayangan is derived from the place where it is built. This eastern gateway of Lombok primarily serves to connect Lombok with Poto Tano Port in Sumbawa and Labuan Badas.

In addition to ferries and Legundi ships, Lembar Port is often used by cruise ships for docking. Other ports like those in Senggigi, Gili Trawangan, Gili Air, or Bangsal seem to be not ready to accommodate large five-star cruise ships.

According to the latest information, Gili Mas Port in West Lombok will be utilized as a world-class cruise ship port.

Historical Ports in Lombok.

There are several ports in Lombok that have witnessed the historical developments of the island.

Ampenan Port

During the Dutch colonial period, Ampenan served as the main port city. Ampenan Port, located on Ampenan Beach, began development around 1800 and became a major trading center in Lombok from 1948 to 1950.

Similar to other trading cities, there were various ethnic groups residing in the vicinity of Ampenan, including Malay, Arab, Chinese, Bugis, Javanese, and others.

Unfortunately, Ampenan’s coastal location, which was exposed to the strong waves of the Lombok Strait, led to its closure in 1970. The main port of Lombok was eventually relocated to Lembar in West Lombok.

If you visit Lombok, take some time to relax around Ampenan Beach, where this port used to be. You can still witness the remnants of the wooden docks from the Dutch colonial era.

Carik port

North Lombok has a historical site in the form of a port. Some historians even argue that Carik is the first port on the land of Lombok. Currently, Carik Port, located in Anyar Village, Bayan District, serves as a cargo port for interregional transportation.

Labuan Haji Port

During the Dutch and Japanese colonial periods, the people of Lombok used this historical site as the starting point for their pilgrimage to the holy land of Mecca. This is the reason it is called Labuan Haji.

Furthermore, this place also served as the entry point for Chinese traders into the Lombok region. This can be seen in some of the old buildings and residences in the surrounding area that adopted Chinese architectural styles.

Several cemeteries for Chinese descendants can also be found in the Penede Gandor area, about 500 meters from the port.

Apart from its historical significance, Labuan Haji is also renowned as the best place to enjoy the sunrise.

To stimulate economic growth, ideally, each island should have several ports for the purpose of forwarding goods.

Gili mas port

Gili Mas is the newest and largest cargo port in Lombok. It has a 400-meter-long jetty capable of accommodating various sizes of ships. It even challenges large cruise ships like the Sun Princess, which is 261 meters long, 32 meters wide, and carries 1,988 passengers and 862 crew members.

In addition to Gili Mas, Carik and Labuhan Haji, which I explained earlier, are also actively used as interregional cargo ports.
